Lib Dems Criticise 2.9% Council Tax Rise11.30.00pm GMT Tue 18th Mar 2008 At February's main council meeting, the Labour Party proposed a 2.9% council tax increase. Liberal Democrat Councillor Philip Nathan voted against this rise. Liberal Democrats believe that while more money is needed for investment in the Town Centre, too much money is being thrown after the £4.9 million invested in the arch and market square development. We know that there has been a fall off in the footfall (a measure of business) even following this massive investment. Liberal Democrats are proposing a 1.7% budget increase which was costed with council officials. This would allow some market place investment in events and entertainment through the year, but would keep more money in the pockets of Chester-le-Street residents, and would help to reduce other price rises, such as the increase of 20% in some burial charges.
