At February's main council meeting, the Labour Party proposed a 2.9% council tax increase. Liberal Democrat Councillor Philip Nathan voted against this rise. Liberal Democrats believe that while more money is needed for investment in the Town Centre, too much money is being thrown after the £4.9 million invested in the arch and market square development. We know that there has been a fall off in the footfall (a measure of business) even following this massive investment.

In response to a written question from Liberal Democrat Councillor, Philip Nathan, it was revealed at last week's district council meeting that the cost of the town centre regeneration projects has been over £4.9 million pounds.

Liberal Democrat councillor for Edmondsley and Waldridge, Philip Nathan, has criticised the new civic heart development in Chester-le-Street. The scheme for development of the town centre has cost Chester-le-Street more than £2 million pounds but is an eyesore.
